Short answer. Check for liquid, swelling, heat, odor, or visible damage before connecting power. If the phone and charging equipment are dry and undamaged, use one compatible wall charger and cable. Samsung says a fully depleted battery can take up to 10 minutes to show a charging indicator and calls for one hour of charging. Record any sound, vibration, ring, icon, or screen change, then try one supported soft reboot.
Stop at a safety warning. Do not charge a phone with recent liquid exposure, a moisture warning, swelling, case separation, unusual heat, smoke, sparks, odor, corrosion, bent pins, or visible charger damage. Do not open the phone, disconnect the battery, probe or scrape a port, flash firmware, or choose a data-erasing reset.

First, describe the response

Record the Galaxy model if you know it, the last normal use, the last charge level, and any recent drop, liquid exposure, repair, or update. Then note exactly what happens when you press the Side or Power button once.

What the phone doesWhat it means for the next checkRoute
No light, sound, vibration, icon, ring, or screen changeThe phone may be drained, frozen, or unable to use the charging path.Continue with one controlled charging check.
It rings, vibrates, or makes notification sounds behind a dark displayThe phone has some power, so this is not complete no response.Use the black-screen guide.
A battery icon, logo, startup screen, or Maintenance Boot Mode appearsThe phone has responded.Follow the exact screen. Choose Normal Boot only if Maintenance Boot Mode appears.

A silent phone with a dark display does not prove that its battery, charging port, power button, display, or board has failed. Keep those as possibilities until model-specific testing identifies the fault.

Check for liquid, swelling, heat, and damage

Inspect the phone, cable, charger, and charging port in good light. Do not connect power if you see corrosion, bent pins, cracked or burnt equipment, a lifted back or screen, or a case that no longer sits flat. A phone that recently got wet belongs on the phone water-damage path, not a charging test.

If the case or screen is lifting, the phone feels misshapen, or the battery area is unusually hot, stop using it. Review the battery-swelling signs and ask the manufacturer or a qualified repair provider how to handle and transport the device. Do not press the case closed.

Use one known charging path

For a dry and undamaged phone, connect one compatible Samsung-certified charger and cable directly to a known working wall outlet. Seat the USB-C connector with normal straight pressure. Do not force, wiggle, probe, scrape, or add liquid to the port.

Leave the connection alone long enough to read the result. Samsung says a completely depleted battery may need up to 10 minutes before the charging indicator appears, and its current no-power guidance calls for one hour on an appropriate charger. Repeatedly disconnecting the cable makes the result harder to interpret.

Stop if the phone, plug, cable, or charger develops unusual heat, odor, smoke, sparks, crackling, or a loose connection. A connector that fits is not proof that the charger and cable are suitable for the model.

Call the phone once

After the charging interval, call the phone from another device once. A ring, vibration, or notification sound with no picture points toward a powered phone with a display problem. Switch to the black-screen guide and avoid repeated restart attempts.

If the Side or Power button feels loose, stuck, or does not move normally, do not press it harder. The phone power-button guide explains what to record before service.

Try one supported soft reboot

Samsung's current US guidance uses the Side or Power button together with Volume down for a soft reboot. Hold that supported pair until the phone responds, then release it. Button timing and screen behavior can vary by model, so use Samsung's model-specific instructions if the usual sequence does not match your phone.

If Maintenance Boot Mode appears, select Normal Boot. Do not choose a factory reset, data wipe, bootloader action, or unfamiliar recovery option. Do not keep repeating button combinations after one controlled attempt.

Choose the next step from the result

A phone that starts after charging may simply have been deeply discharged, but the check does not explain why it lost charge. Back up important data and watch for a repeat. A phone that responds only through sounds or vibration needs the display path. A phone that remains completely unresponsive after one compatible charger and one supported reboot needs model-specific support or inspection.

Bring the exact model, charger and cable used, the response at 10 minutes and one hour, every sound or vibration, the button result, liquid or impact history, and whether the data matters. Those facts are more useful than guessing which part failed.

Checked October 13, 2026 against Samsung's current US guide for a phone or tablet that will not power on or off, Samsung UK's Galaxy no-power guide, and Google's guide for an Android device that will not charge or turn on. Samsung supplies the damage inspection, charging interval, response checks, soft reboot, Normal Boot, and service guidance. Google also separates charging response from a phone that rings behind a blank screen. Current search results were reviewed for the way owners describe this symptom. They do not prove a widespread defect, a common failed part, or a repair success rate. Budget Repair added the safety stops, evidence record, internal routes, and local service boundary.
