Start here: remove the phone from the liquid and unplug any cable if you can do so safely. Do not connect power or accessories. Wipe the outside gently with a soft dry cloth, then leave the device in a dry place at room temperature with airflow. If it is hot, swollen, hissing, smoking, smells unusual, or has visible battery or frame damage, stop handling it and keep people away from the device. Manufacturer instructions differ, so do not treat one brand's rinse, drying time, or charging advice as universal.

Stop immediately for battery or electrical warning signs

Liquid exposure and a damaged lithium-ion battery are separate risks that can occur together. Stop using, charging, moving, or testing the phone if you notice unusual heat, swelling, a lifting screen, odor, smoke, hissing, sparks, or a crushed or punctured area. Do not put the device in a pocket, bag, drawer, or combustible container. Move away and contact local emergency services if there is fire, smoke, or immediate danger.

Do not open the phone or disconnect an internal battery. Do not puncture, press, bend, heat, freeze, vacuum, or blow compressed air into the device. This guide covers external first response only, not board cleaning, battery handling, or data recovery.

Use this first-response decision card

  • A cable or charger is connected: disconnect it from the phone and power source if your hands and the area are dry and it is safe to reach. Do not reconnect it to “check.”
  • The phone is still on: avoid repeated taps, calls, camera tests, or restarts. Follow the exact device maker's power-off guidance when available; do not improvise blind button sequences.
  • The phone is already off: leave it off. Do not power it on to see whether the screen, speaker, or camera still works.
  • A liquid or moisture alert appears: unplug the cable immediately and follow the exact alert and manufacturer page. Do not override the warning except where the manufacturer explicitly describes a genuine emergency option and you accept the risk.
  • The liquid was salt water, pool water, a drink, cleaner, or another contaminant: record what it was. Do not apply a generic rinse; some manufacturer instructions are model-specific and can conflict.
  • Important data is not backed up: make data preservation part of the repair intake. Do not keep powering the phone or accept a reset merely to test it.

Dry the outside without forcing moisture inward

Remove a loose external case if it comes away normally and there are no heat, swelling, or damage signs. Blot the exterior with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth. Set the phone on a stable surface in a dry, ventilated room at normal temperature. Keep ports unobstructed and follow the manufacturer's orientation guidance for the exact model.

Apple tells owners who receive a connector-liquid alert to disconnect the cable, gently tap the iPhone with the connector facing down, and leave it in a dry area with airflow. Google tells Pixel owners to remove the phone from water, turn it off, dry it with a soft cloth, and leave it on a flat surface at room temperature. These are useful examples, but the details are not permission to guess for every phone.

Do not use rice, heat, air pressure, or port tools

Rice does not provide a controlled repair and can introduce particles. External heat can damage adhesives, displays, seals, and batteries. Compressed air can push moisture or debris farther into openings. Cotton swabs, paper products, pins, brushes, and other objects can damage port contacts or leave material behind.

Do not shake the phone aggressively, put it in an oven, place it on a radiator, use a hair dryer, vacuum a port, or surround it with improvised chemicals or desiccants. Passive drying is not proof that the inside is clean, corrosion-free, safe to charge, or ready to preserve data.

Why there is no universal drying countdown

Exposure amount, liquid type, phone construction, cracks, previous repairs, seal wear, connector design, temperature, and airflow all change the situation. Apple says a connector alert can take up to a day to clear, while Samsung's charging-port page gives a shorter estimate for port moisture. Neither time is a universal guarantee that the entire phone is dry or undamaged.

Use the exact manufacturer's current instructions for the exact device and symptom. If the guidance says to wait before reconnecting a cable, treat that as the earliest supported retry point—not proof that internal liquid damage is impossible.

Water resistance does not make a phone waterproof

An IP rating describes laboratory resistance under specified conditions. Google notes that normal wear, repair, disassembly, and damage can reduce water resistance. Cracks, bent frames, loose glass, worn seals, and prior service can change real-world protection. The absence of an immediate failure also does not prove that liquid stayed outside.

Record the phone model, whether it had prior damage or repair, how long and how deeply it was exposed, the liquid involved, whether a cable was attached, and every symptom that followed. This evidence is more useful than assuming the rating settled the question.

What the charging alert means

Apple and Samsung use moisture protection to block wired charging when liquid is detected at the connector. That protects against corrosion or electrical damage; it does not identify where all moisture is, prove the phone is otherwise healthy, or guarantee that a cable is undamaged.

If the alert repeats after following the model-specific drying guidance, try only the manufacturer's supported cable checks. A warning that follows one accessory may implicate that accessory; a warning that follows known-good supported accessories can justify service. Do not scrape, swab, or spray the port.

Watch for delayed symptoms without repeatedly testing

After the relevant waiting guidance, record any supported retry and its result once. Stop again if the phone becomes hot, restarts, will not charge, shows lines or flicker, has fogged cameras, distorted sound, unreliable buttons, touch problems, unusual battery drain, or a recurring moisture alert. These observations do not prove a specific component failed.

If the phone turns on and remains stable without danger signs, prioritize a current backup through the normal supported method. Do not delay a backup to run benchmarks, games, updates, or repeated charging tests. A working screen today is not a guarantee against delayed liquid-related failure.

When a physical inspection makes sense

  • The phone shows heat, swelling, odor, smoke, hissing, frame separation, or visible battery damage.
  • The device was exposed through cracked glass, a bent frame, an open port, or a prior repair.
  • The liquid was salty, sugary, acidic, dirty, chlorinated, or otherwise contaminated.
  • The phone will not start or charge after the exact manufacturer guidance has been completed.
  • The display, camera, speaker, microphone, buttons, touch input, charging, or wireless connections behave differently.
  • Important data is unbacked-up and additional power cycles could increase the risk.

A physical inspection can identify evidence and testing options; it cannot guarantee a particular component repair or data recovery before the device is examined.

Bring useful details to the repair handoff

Write down the exact model, exposure time, liquid type, prior cracks or repairs, power and charging state, alerts, symptoms, and what you already tried.
