Short answer: confirm that the TV can show Home, volume, or Settings, then connect one powered source directly with one known-good HDMI cable. Test that same source and cable in another TV input. If they work there, the original input is the leading service branch. If several sources and cables fail in every HDMI input while the TV's own menus still appear, the wider HDMI path needs attention. Keep the TV closed, and never bend or hold a plug at an angle to make it work.

Start with the exact symptom

“The HDMI port is not working” can describe several different failures. Write down what you actually see before changing anything:

  • a visible No Signal message from the TV
  • a black screen while the TV's Home or volume overlay still appears
  • picture without sound, or sound without picture
  • video that cuts out when a receiver, switch, adapter, or soundbar is in the path
  • one HDMI input that fails while another works
  • every HDMI input failing with more than one source and cable
  • a loose, recessed, cracked, bent, or heat-marked connector

If the TV cannot show its own Home screen, volume bar, or Settings, this is wider than one HDMI source. Use the broader TV symptom guide and arrange service if the TV remains unresponsive.

Run the one-source, one-cable, one-input test

This test follows current manufacturer guidance and keeps the result readable.

  1. Confirm the source is on. Wake the streaming box, console, cable box, or player. If it has a separate power supply, confirm that it is connected normally.
  2. Select the matching input. If the cable is in HDMI 2, choose HDMI 2 with the TV remote. Do not rely on automatic input switching.
  3. Power down before reconnecting. Turn off the TV and source, unplug the HDMI cable at both ends, inspect it without bending the pins, and reconnect it straight and fully.
  4. Remove the middle devices. For this test, connect the source directly to the TV. Leave the receiver, soundbar passthrough, switch, splitter, dock, adapter, and wall plate out of the path.
  5. Power on and wait. Start the TV and source, choose the input again, and give the connection a minute to settle.
  6. Move only the TV end. Power down, move the same cable to another HDMI input, power back on, and select that input.

Do not swap the source, cable, and TV input all at once. A picture that returns after three changes tells you very little.

Read the pattern, not the guess

The same source and cable work in another TV input

The original input becomes the strongest branch. Confirm it once more with a second known-good source if that is easy and safe. If the result repeats, stop using the suspect input and arrange model-specific service. This still does not prove whether the external connector, solder joints, an input board, the main board, or another part is responsible.

One source fails in every TV input

Keep the TV out of the blame for now. Try the same source on another display if one is already available, or try a different known-good source on the TV. One cable fails across sources or inputs

Retire that cable from the test. A cable can be physically intact and still fail at a particular bandwidth or connection. Use a cable that already carries stable picture and sound with the same equipment. Do not buy the most expensive cable as a diagnosis; the comparison is what matters.

Direct connection works, but the full setup does not

Add the receiver, soundbar, switch, wall plate, adapter, or dock back one item at a time. The first step that makes the signal disappear is the next branch. Check that device's current support instructions and input/output labels. Do not treat a passthrough failure as proof that the TV port is bad.

Several sources and cables fail in every HDMI input

If the TV's Home screen and built-in apps still work, the pattern points toward the TV's HDMI input path or a shared setting. Restart the TV normally and check for a model-supported HDMI diagnostic or current software update. Do not enter a hidden service menu, install unofficial firmware, or reset the TV before recording its model, version, and test results.

No Signal, black screen, and ARC are different problems

A visible No Signal screen means the TV is producing a picture but does not see usable video on the selected input. A TV that cannot draw its own menu has a wider picture or startup problem. And ARC or eARC concerns audio returning from the TV to a soundbar or receiver. A soundbar with no ARC audio does not prove that the same HDMI input cannot receive video.

If the picture is stable and only return audio is missing, follow the TV and audio device makers' ARC instructions. Keep that work separate from this video-signal test.

What a loose or damaged port changes

Look from the outside with the TV off and stable. Stop using the input if the socket is recessed, cracked, visibly deformed, unusually hot, discolored, or no longer holds a plug normally. A picture that appears only while you lift, press, or twist the cable is not a safe workaround.

  • Do not wiggle the plug to keep the picture on.
  • Do not wedge paper, plastic, tape, or another object around the connector.
  • Do not bend the cable against the TV or use its weight as leverage.
  • Do not resolder or replace the connector without the correct model, board inspection, equipment, and electrical safety controls.
Stop for electrical or impact warning signs. End testing for smoke, arcing, a burnt or electrical smell, unusual heat, new buzzing or popping, liquid exposure, a damaged power cord, a cracked cabinet, or repeated shutdown. Disconnect power only if the plug is safely reachable. Keep people away from a dangerous condition and use qualified service or emergency guidance.

Keep the back cover on

TVs can retain dangerous voltage, and the display and circuit boards are easy to damage. External comparison is the owner-safe limit.

  • Do not remove the rear cover or touch boards, capacitors, shields, or internal cables.
  • Do not probe voltage, inject a signal into exposed contacts, bypass protection, or try to discharge components.
  • Do not order a connector, input board, or main board from a No Signal message alone.
  • Do not interrupt a software update or install a file meant for another model or region.

Build a useful service record

Save the details that a repair shop can actually use:

  • TV brand, full model number, approximate age, and current software version if menus work
  • the exact on-screen message and whether Home, volume, Settings, and built-in apps appear
  • each source device and HDMI cable tested
  • which numbered inputs work and which do not
  • whether a direct connection works without the receiver, switch, adapter, soundbar, or wall plate
  • whether the problem is video, audio, ARC or eARC, intermittent loss, or a physically loose connection
  • recent move, impact, storm, power event, wall-mount work, or equipment change

Take a clear outside photo of visible port damage only if you can reach it without moving a large or wall-mounted TV alone.

When an inspection makes sense
