Start here: try another known-good HDMI cable, another HDMI input, and a direct connection from the console to the display. If those tests fail on more than one display, or the plug feels loose and the image changes when the cable moves, the console needs inspection.

First, identify what “not working” means

Different symptoms point to different parts of the signal path. A TV that says No signal is not receiving a usable video signal on the selected input. A picture that flashes, shows colored speckles, or cuts out at higher resolutions may indicate a cable, display setting, or connection-quality problem. A completely dead console has a power problem, not merely an HDMI problem.

Note whether the PS5 power light behaves normally, whether you hear startup audio, whether the display briefly recognizes a device, and whether the problem began after the console was moved or the cable was bumped. Those details are more useful than repeatedly reconnecting the same setup.

Six safe checks to do before requesting repair

  1. Confirm the selected TV input. Use the TV remote to select the exact HDMI input where the console is connected. Do not assume the TV switched automatically.
  2. Reseat both cable ends with the power off. Shut down the console and display, then reconnect the cable straight into each port. A connector that is only partly seated can mimic a failed port.
  3. Try a known-good HDMI cable. Sony recommends the cable supplied with the PS5 for its highest-bandwidth features, but another sound cable can still help determine whether the original lead is defective.
  4. Use another HDMI input on the same display. This rules out one damaged or misconfigured TV input. Select the new input manually after moving the cable.
  5. Connect the PS5 directly to the screen. Temporarily remove a soundbar, receiver, splitter, capture device, or switch from the path. Every extra device adds another possible compatibility or connection failure.
  6. Try a second TV or monitor if one is available. A direct test on another display is the strongest simple way to separate a console-side problem from a display-side problem.

Sony's own picture-and-sound troubleshooting follows the same basic order: secure the connection, test another cable and input, connect directly, power-cycle the equipment, and confirm current display firmware. Completing those checks gives a repair technician a much cleaner starting point.

Signs the physical HDMI port may be damaged

A visual inspection can reveal obvious trouble, but use a flashlight and look only from outside the console. Do not insert a pick, screwdriver, cotton swab, or other object into the port. The small contacts can bend, and the connector is attached to the main board.

Professional inspection is appropriate when one or more of these signs are present:

  • The HDMI plug no longer sits squarely or feels much looser than it used to.
  • The metal shell is bent, pushed inward, or visibly separated from the console opening.
  • Contacts inside the port look bent, missing, or uneven.
  • The picture appears only when the cable is held at a particular angle.
  • The failure began immediately after the console fell, was moved while connected, or received a sideways pull on the cable.
  • Multiple known-good cables and multiple displays produce the same no-signal result.

These signs do not prove that only the connector is faulty. The HDMI encoder circuitry, board traces, filters, or other components can create similar symptoms. A proper diagnosis checks the connector and the surrounding circuit instead of replacing a port by guesswork.

Do not keep wiggling a live cable. If movement changes the picture, stop testing. Repeated sideways pressure can worsen connector or board damage and turn a repairable joint into damaged pads or traces.

What a repair shop should verify

A careful repair process begins by reproducing the symptom with known-good test equipment. The technician should inspect connector alignment and contact condition, check whether the port is mechanically secure, and evaluate the relevant board-level signal path. If replacement is needed, HDMI work requires controlled disassembly and precise soldering around heat-sensitive components.

Ask whether the diagnosis distinguishes the port from the rest of the HDMI circuit and whether the repaired console will be tested for stable output after reassembly. A quick picture at one resolution is useful, but a complete check should also confirm that the connection remains stable without cable pressure.

Repair or replace the console?

A damaged connector does not automatically make the entire console disposable. The practical decision depends on the diagnosis, the condition of the board around the connector, other damage, the quoted repair cost, and the console's overall condition. If the board is otherwise sound, repairing the connection can preserve the console, installed games, and accessories without the cost and waste of replacement.
