Name the affected controller
Start with a simple record. Note the console's system version, the affected side, the battery level shown for each controller, and whether the charging icon appears. Record whether the controller works while attached, works wirelessly after removal, or disconnects as soon as it leaves the console.
Nintendo's original Joy-Con and Joy-Con 2 use different attachment and charging designs. This guide is for Joy-Con 2 on Nintendo Switch 2. Do not force an older controller, grip, rail accessory, or power adapter into a Joy-Con 2 test.
- Only one side fails: compare that controller with the other side through the same supported steps.
- Both sides fail on the console: keep the console power path, system software, and attachment state in scope.
- The icon appears but the level does not rise: record the starting level and the level after a quiet charging period.
- The controller charges but runs for very little time: treat that as a battery-runtime symptom, not a no-charge result.
- The icon starts and stops: stop moving the attached controller or live cable and preserve the pattern for inspection.
One screen photo can help, but remove account names, friend information, serial numbers, and other private details before sharing it.
Inspect the power path while unplugged
Nintendo's charging guidance starts with the Nintendo Switch 2 AC adapter, model NGN-01. Unplug the adapter from the wall and console before checking it. Look for a damaged cable, bent plug, debris, a loose housing, discoloration, or signs of liquid. Also inspect the console and controller attachment areas without inserting a tool.
If any part is damaged, stop. A charger that works on another USB-C device does not prove that it supplies the supported power path for Nintendo Switch 2. Use the official adapter for this comparison when it is available, and connect it directly to a known working wall outlet rather than a questionable strip, hub, or third-party dock.
Reconnect the adapter to the console, then to the outlet. Leave the console on or in Sleep Mode. A fully powered-off console may not give you the same immediate controller status display.
Attach one Joy-Con 2 and read the Controllers screen
Nintendo tells owners to press the SYNC button once, then attach the Joy-Con 2 to the console. Use a normal, even motion. Do not twist the controller or repeatedly detach and slam it back into place.
Open HOME Menu > Controllers and inspect the icon for the attached controller. Repeat with the other Joy-Con 2 so the comparison uses the same console, adapter, outlet, and software state.
- One side shows charging and the other does not: keep the affected controller and its attachment path in scope.
- Both sides show charging: leave them attached long enough to compare actual battery gain. Nintendo says a full Joy-Con 2 charge takes about three and a half hours, so a short test should be used only to confirm movement, not full capacity.
- Neither side shows charging: confirm the console itself is receiving direct power before changing more variables.
- A controller is not recognized: record that separately. Recognition and battery charging are related observations, but they are not the same diagnosis.
Do not judge the result from the icon alone. Write down whether the percentage or battery bars actually rise and whether the controller continues working when detached.
Install supported system and controller updates
Nintendo's current instructions place controller updates under System Settings > Controllers & Accessories > Update Controllers. Connect the console to reliable power and install the current system update first. Each controller needs enough power to complete its update.
Update the controllers through the supported menu, then restart the console normally and repeat one controlled charging check. Do not interrupt an update, install unofficial firmware, factory-reset the console, or remove saved data for this symptom.
Some recent owner reports describe charging-grip recognition trouble after an update. Nintendo has not confirmed a general update-caused Joy-Con 2 charging defect in the sources checked for this guide. Treat update timing as a detail to record, not proof of cause.
Compare the BEE-010 charging grip if available
Nintendo's Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip, model BEE-010, can charge attached Joy-Con 2 controllers when the grip is connected to the Nintendo Switch 2 AC adapter or another supported power source. The ordinary grip supplied with a console is not automatically a charging grip. Check the model before relying on the result.
Disconnect the controller from the console, attach it normally to the BEE-010 grip, and connect the official adapter. Check the grip's charging indication and allow time for the controller level to move. Then test the other controller through the same grip path.
- The controller charges on the console but not the grip: keep the grip, its USB-C connection, power source, and attachment state in scope.
- The controller charges on the grip but not the console: keep the console attachment path and software state in scope.
- The same controller fails in both places while the other works: the symptom follows that controller, but an inspection is still needed before naming a failed part.
- Both controllers fail in both places: confirm the official adapter and outlet once, then stop adding accessories.
Do not buy a battery, replacement controller, grip, or console part from this table alone. The test locates the repeated symptom. It does not see inside the hardware.
Know when to stop and arrange service
Arrange an inspection when one supported charging path remains unstable, a controller is not recognized after the supported sync and update steps, the battery level never rises, the connection changes without movement, or the controller loses power soon after removal. Get help sooner for heat, swelling, liquid, impact damage, a loose connector, or visible damage.
Bring the console, affected Joy-Con 2, official adapter, and BEE-010 grip if it was part of the test. Include the system version, controller-update result, starting and ending battery levels, charging icons, left-versus-right comparison, and any recent drop, spill, update, or prior repair. This evidence lets a technician reproduce the safe portion of the problem without guessing.
For another console power path, see the Nintendo Switch not charging guide. If the symptom is stick movement rather than power, use the Joy-Con drift guide. Budget Repair's game console repair page explains local service in Lawrence. To request an inspection, send the exact controller and test result through the instant quote form. Inspection comes before any confirmed cause, price, part, turnaround time, or repair outcome.
