Short answer: shut the MacBook down immediately and unplug the charger, cables, and accessories. If it will not respond, hold the power or Touch ID button until it turns off. Do not charge it, turn it back on, press keys to test them, or keep reconnecting a wet USB-C cable. A supported USB-C liquid alert has Apple’s own drying path. Liquid through the keyboard, trackpad, hinge, vent, display, or enclosure is a broader spill and should stay off until it can be assessed.

What should you do in the first minute?

  1. Disconnect external power. Unplug the adapter from the wall and remove every cable and accessory from the MacBook.
  2. Shut it down. Use Apple menu > Shut Down if the Mac still responds. If it is frozen, hold the power or Touch ID button until the screen is black and the computer is quiet.
  3. Move it only if the surface is wet. Lift it away from the puddle without shaking, swinging, or repeatedly opening and closing the display.
  4. Blot the exterior gently. Use a soft, lint-free cloth. Do not push liquid toward a key, port, hinge, speaker opening, or vent.
  5. Write down what happened. Record the liquid, amount, entry area, power state, connected charger, warnings, and anything you already tried.

Unsaved work may be lost when you force a shutdown, but continuing to power wet electronics can create a larger problem. Once the MacBook is off, leave it off. A successful boot right after a spill does not prove the inside is dry or free of residue.

Choose the right path: port alert or wider spill

Apple’s current instructions distinguish liquid detected at a supported USB-C port from liquid that has entered the product more broadly. The difference matters.

  • USB-C liquid alert only: the MacBook warns about liquid in a USB-C port, cable, or accessory, and no drink or spill reached another part of the computer. Disconnect both ends of the cable, shut down, and follow Apple’s alert-specific drying steps.
  • Keyboard or enclosure spill: liquid crossed the keyboard, trackpad, speaker, hinge, vent, display edge, underside, or another opening. Shut down, disconnect power, avoid a restart test, and arrange service.
  • Not sure where it went: treat it as the broader spill. A small amount can travel under keys or along an opening where you cannot see it.

Apple’s at-least-one-day wait applies to the supported USB-C liquid-alert path. It is not a universal promise that every MacBook spill becomes safe to start after 24 hours.

How to handle a supported USB-C liquid alert

On supported MacBook models running macOS Sequoia or later, macOS can warn when it detects liquid in a USB-C port or on a connected cable or accessory. Apple says charging through a wet port can corrode the pins, cause permanent damage, or stop the connection from working.

  1. Unplug the cable or accessory from the MacBook and unplug its other end from power or the connected device.
  2. Shut the MacBook down and disconnect all power sources.
  3. Leave the MacBook in a dry area with some airflow. Do not use forced hot air.
  4. After at least a day, visually check the port. Reconnect only when the MacBook, cable ends, and accessory appear completely dry.
  5. If the alert returns, shut down again and allow another day in a dry area with airflow.

If the alert appears every time with one cable, that cable may be damaged. If it appears repeatedly with an Apple cable or accessory that is dry, Apple directs owners to Apple Support.

Why repeated power tests make the diagnosis worse

Turning the MacBook on every few hours, connecting a charger to “see if it works,” or pressing wet keys adds power and movement while the condition is still unknown. It also erases the cleanest timeline. A technician needs to know what happened before any restart or charging attempt.

If the MacBook turned itself off, showed a liquid alert, lost the display, stopped charging, or began acting strangely, record that once. Do not recreate the symptom. If it is already off and will not turn on, leave it off instead of starting Apple’s general no-power checklist. Cable and adapter tests that are reasonable on a dry Mac are not the next step after a spill.

Do not use rice, heat, air pressure, or port tools

Apple specifically says not to use an external heat source, compressed air, a foreign object in the port, or a bag of rice for a MacBook liquid alert. Those same shortcuts are poor choices after a wider spill.

  • Do not use a hair dryer, heat gun, oven, heater, direct sun, or heated pad.
  • Do not blow into a port or use compressed air, a vacuum, or suction.
  • Do not insert paper towel, cotton, a swab, brush, pick, cable, or metal tool into an opening.
  • Do not pour in alcohol, cleaner, distilled water, or another liquid.
  • Do not shake the MacBook or stand it in a dramatic “tent” position that can move liquid into new areas.
  • Do not remove the bottom case or disconnect the internal battery unless you are trained and following the exact model’s service procedure.

Dry-looking surfaces can still leave sugar, minerals, salt, or cleaner residue behind. Coffee, soda, juice, alcohol, salt water, and cleaning products deserve prompt assessment even when the MacBook still works.

Stop handling it for battery or electrical warning signs. If the MacBook is hot, swollen, hissing, smoking, sparking, leaking, smells burnt or sweet, or has a lifting trackpad or bottom case, do not press it flat or keep carrying it around. Disconnect external power only if you can do that safely, move people away from it, keep clear of flammable material, and contact qualified battery or emergency guidance for the condition you see.

Make a useful liquid-damage record

A short, factual timeline is more useful than another power test. Keep these details together:

  • exact MacBook model and approximate year
  • date and time of the spill
  • liquid type and rough amount
  • where the liquid landed and which openings it may have reached
  • whether the MacBook was on, asleep, off, or charging
  • every cable or accessory that was connected
  • the first warning, sound, smell, screen change, or shutdown
  • how quickly power was disconnected
  • every restart, charging, drying, wiping, or cleaning attempt
  • whether current data exists in iCloud, Time Machine, or another backup

Do not share your Apple Account password, device passcode, recovery key, or two-factor code just to request an estimate. If data access becomes part of the repair, discuss privacy and authorization before handing over credentials.

What service and coverage can—and cannot—tell you

Apple says liquid exposure is not covered by its one-year limited warranty or the older AppleCare Protection Plan. A current AppleCare plan for Mac may include accidental-damage protection with a service fee, subject to its terms and exclusions. Consumer-law rights can differ by location.

Liquid Contact Indicators can help document exposure, but they do not identify every damaged part or predict whether the MacBook and its data can be recovered. A working keyboard, charging light, or display after the spill does not guarantee that corrosion or residue is absent. And a no-power Mac does not prove the logic board is the only failed part.
