Short answer: test one known-good, low-risk USB device directly in each laptop port, then try a second device or cable in the suspect port. Record power, data, charging, and display behavior separately. If the failure follows the accessory, the laptop port is probably not the problem. If several known-good devices fail only in one loose or visibly damaged port, stop using it and arrange a physical inspection.
Stop for heat or damage. Unplug the device and stop using the port if you see bent pins, discoloration, liquid, or a loose shell; if a plug must be held at an angle; or if the port, cable, or device becomes hot, smells burned, sparks, or smokes. Do not put metal, liquid, cotton swabs, or improvised tools inside the port.

First, write down what “not working” means

A USB connector can carry more than one function. A phone may charge without appearing in File Explorer. A USB-C port may handle data but not video. A dock may work through one port but not another because the ports support different capabilities. “It has power” does not prove that the data path works, and one missing feature does not prove that the whole port is dead.

Before changing anything, note the laptop model, the port you used, the device and cable, and exactly what happened. Save any Windows notification or Device Manager code. If the device holds important files, use a safer test accessory first and keep the only copy of your data out of the experiment.

Use the device-port-function matrix

The goal is to change one thing at a time. A simple grid is enough:

  • Rows: the mouse, flash drive, phone, dock, display adapter, or other device you tested
  • Columns: each USB-A or USB-C port on the laptop
  • Result: detected, data works, power only, charging works, display works, intermittent, or no response

Use known-good accessories. A drawer full of unknown cables is not a control. Connect directly to the laptop for the first pass, without a hub, extension, or dock between them.

If one device fails everywhere

The device, its cable, its required software, or its power demand is the stronger suspect. Try the device on another computer if that is safe. Dell's current support flow uses this comparison before blaming the original computer. Printers, scanners, phones, security keys, and specialized equipment may also need their own vendor software or permission before Windows can use them.

If several devices fail in one port

One-port-only failure is stronger evidence for that connector, its capability, or the laptop's internal path. Check the laptop manual before calling a USB-C feature broken: two identical-looking USB-C ports do not always support the same charging, display, Thunderbolt, or USB4 functions. If basic low-power data devices also fail only there, record the result and stop repeated plugging.

If every port fails

A whole-laptop failure broadens the possibilities. Windows state, a recent update, power management, a controller, firmware, or hardware may be involved. Restart the laptop after saving your work, then check Windows visibility and the manufacturer's model-specific diagnostics. Do not jump straight to opening the case or downloading a generic “USB driver” from a search result.

If a hub or dock fails but direct connection works

The laptop has shown that the direct path can work. Now check the hub or dock's power supply, cable, supported USB-C mode, and vendor instructions. Microsoft notes that a device may need more power and that the laptop, cable, port, dock, and accessory all need to support the requested USB-C function.

Check the connector without touching the inside

  1. Shut down and unplug the laptop if there was impact, liquid, heat, or a burning smell. Do not continue testing a safety symptom.
  2. Use good light. Look from outside the port. Compare its shell and center tongue with another port of the same type if the laptop has one.
  3. Notice the fit. A normal plug should seat without force. Stop if it catches, scrapes, drops out, or works only when pressed sideways.
  4. Keep cleaning external. Do not scrape contacts or spray liquid into the opening. If debris is not loose and easy to address under the laptop maker's instructions, leave it for inspection.

A bent center tongue, missing plastic, pushed-in shell, or angle-dependent connection is enough reason to stop. Continuing to flex the plug can damage the accessory as well as the laptop.

Read Windows evidence before changing drivers

Open Device Manager and look for the connected device, Universal Serial Bus controllers, and any warning icon. Open the affected item's properties and record the exact Device status message and code. Microsoft publishes different guidance for different codes; Code 43, for example, means a driver reported that a device failed in some way. It does not prove by itself that the laptop's connector is physically broken.

Also note the Windows notification. “USB device not recognized,” “device might need more power,” “display connection might be limited,” and “use a different USB port” describe different branches. Preserve the wording before unplugging the device or changing settings.

Try the lowest-cost checks in order

  1. Save your work and restart the laptop. Then repeat the same known-good direct connection once.
  2. Reconnect the device directly. Remove the hub or dock for the comparison.
  3. Try another known-good cable. Make sure it supports the function you need; some USB-C cables charge but do not carry the expected data or display mode.
  4. Check the device maker's instructions. Install only model-specific software from the laptop or accessory manufacturer.
  5. Run the laptop maker's supported hardware diagnostic. Record its error or validation code instead of repeatedly changing settings.
  6. Install supported Windows and manufacturer updates only after preserving the evidence. On a managed work or school laptop, let the administrator handle drivers, firmware, and policy.

Do not use a third-party driver site. Do not uninstall every USB controller as a first move. And do not reset BIOS or firmware settings without the exact model instructions and a record of the current configuration.

What the pattern usually points toward

  • One device fails in every port and another device works: investigate the device, cable, required software, compatibility, or power need.
  • Several devices fail only through one hub or dock: investigate the intermediary, its cable, power, and supported modes.
  • A device has power but no data: do not call the port healthy yet; compare the cable, device mode, Windows detection, and another port.
  • USB-C data works but display or charging does not: confirm the port, cable, and laptop specification for that exact function.
  • Several known-good basic devices fail only in one port: the evidence supports a model-specific port inspection.
  • Every port fails after impact, liquid, or an electrical event: shut the laptop down and avoid further powered tests.

These are diagnostic directions, not part-level verdicts. A connector, small I/O board, internal cable, USB controller, power rail, or motherboard path can produce overlapping symptoms. The repair and price depend on the model and what inspection finds.
