Put the symptoms into one of three lanes
The most useful iPhone battery replacement signs fall into three different lanes. Keeping them separate prevents an unnecessary repair and helps you recognize the cases that should not wait.
- Temporary battery use: a recent iOS update, phone setup, photo indexing, app activity, or weak cellular signal is using more power than usual. The drain should change as that work ends.
- Chemical aging: Battery Health shows reduced capacity, a Service or replacement recommendation, or a peak-performance message, and those readings match shorter runtime, shutdowns, or lasting performance trouble.
- Physical safety stop: swelling, screen or enclosure lift, abnormal heat, odor, smoke, hissing, or leakage calls for immediate professional handling, whatever Maximum Capacity says.
A phone can sit in more than one lane. For example, an older battery may have poor runtime during a post-update background load. That is why one observation is rarely enough.
Check Battery usage before you assume the battery is worn out
Open Settings > Battery and review the recent activity chart and app usage. Apple notes that setup work, a software update, app activity, and low cellular signal can temporarily increase battery use.
Write down when the drain began, whether it happens on Wi-Fi and cellular, and which activity appears during the loss. If the phone is cool, stable, and otherwise safe, give recognized setup or update work time to finish. Do not force-close every background service or remove apps at random.
A drain pattern that improves after the temporary work ends is not strong replacement evidence. A pattern that stays poor across ordinary use, charging cycles, and locations deserves the next checks.
Read the Battery Health fields your iPhone actually provides
On current supported iPhones, open Settings > Battery > Battery Health. Some older iOS and iPhone combinations label the screen Battery Health & Charging. Record the fields you see rather than comparing the screen with a different model.
- Maximum Capacity estimates current capacity relative to when the battery was new.
- Peak Performance Capability can show whether the battery currently supports normal peak power or whether performance management followed an unexpected shutdown.
- Service or replacement recommended is Apple’s direct signal that a replacement should be considered.
- Cycle count, manufacture date, and first-use date are available on supported newer models and add context.
Take a screenshot if the phone can be used safely. Include the iPhone model and iOS version, because the fields and wording vary.
Use 80 percent as context, not a universal command
Apple says batteries in iPhone 14 models and earlier are designed to retain 80 percent of original capacity at 500 complete charge cycles under ideal conditions. For iPhone 15 models, Apple gives 1,000 cycles under ideal conditions. Actual capacity depends on regular use and charging.
That makes 80 percent useful context, but it does not prove that a battery is safe, unsafe, defective, genuine, covered, or ready to fail on a specific day. A phone at 79 percent with acceptable runtime and no physical warning is a different case from a phone at 85 percent that repeatedly shuts down or shows a Service message.
AppleCare battery-service terms can include a below-80-percent condition, but coverage, location, inspection, and plan terms still matter. Do not assume every replacement is free.
Match the health reading to real symptoms
Chemical aging reduces how much charge a battery holds and how well it supplies short bursts of peak power. Apple describes unexpected shutdowns as more likely when charge is low, chemical age is higher, or the phone is cold.
Other possible effects of performance management include longer app launches, lower frame rates, dimming, lower speaker volume, and background apps reloading. Those symptoms are not battery proof by themselves. They become more useful when they start alongside degraded Battery Health or a peak-power message.
Keep a simple record for two or three normal use sessions:
- starting and ending charge
- screen-on time and the main tasks
- Wi-Fi or cellular use
- heat and charging behavior
- unexpected shutdowns and the charge shown before each one
- any performance-management or Service message
Do not continue a test on a physically damaged, swelling, smoking, leaking, or abnormally hot phone just to complete the record.
Treat shutdowns and charging trouble as separate clues
Repeated shutdowns at a reported charge above zero can fit reduced peak-power delivery, especially when Battery Health shows a matching message. Save the charge level, temperature, task, and whether the phone restarted only after it was connected to power.
A phone that will not charge can also have a cable, adapter, debris, liquid, connector, or board problem. Use the separate iPhone charging-port guide before treating every charging symptom as a battery replacement sign.
If the display is black while the phone still rings, vibrates, or makes sounds, follow the black-screen checks. A display failure and a battery failure need different evidence.
Check repair history before trusting the percentage
On iPhone XR, iPhone XS models, and later, Settings > General > About can show Parts and Service History. Supported phones may label a battery Genuine, Used, Unknown, or unfinished after a repair.
Apple says Battery Health information may be inaccurate when the battery cannot be verified. Record the exact message. Do not use a third-party battery app or one percentage as proof that the installed part is authentic or defective.
Tell the repair provider about any earlier battery, screen, charging-port, liquid, impact, or board work. That history can change the inspection path without proving the current cause.
Do not open the phone to confirm a battery diagnosis
Lithium-ion batteries are sensitive parts. Apple warns that incorrect replacement can cause overheating, fire, or injury and says trained professional service is the safest and most reliable route for most customers.
This guide intentionally stops before opening the iPhone, heating adhesive, disconnecting internal parts, prying the cell, or installing a replacement. Do not use a heat gun, puncture a cell, flatten a lifted enclosure, or rely on an improvised clamp.
If liquid exposure came before the battery or charging problem, use the phone water-damage first steps and avoid charging the device.

- the exact iPhone model and iOS version
- Battery Health screenshots and every Service or peak-performance message
- cycle count and first-use date, if shown
- recent Battery usage charts and the tasks running during drain
- real runtime and unexpected-shutdown history
- charging behavior, heat, odor, swelling, or enclosure movement
- Parts and Service History and any unverified-part message
- impact, liquid, earlier repair, and coverage information
