Short answer: stop using the iPhone if the rear glass is sharp or loose, the back is lifting, the frame is bent, the phone is hot, you notice smoke or an unusual odor, or liquid may have entered. If the phone is cool, stable, and safe to handle, record the model, crack location, panel gap, frame shape, camera behavior, charging observations, and any recent impact or moisture. A working camera or charger does not prove the nearby parts are undamaged.

Know when to stop using the phone

Apple says not to use an iPhone with cracked glass because it can cause injury. Apple also says to discontinue use if you suspect damage to the phone or battery, since damaged hardware can overheat or cause injury.

That makes the first decision simple: do not keep handling a phone with loose shards, and do not press a lifted back into place. Stop charging and using the phone if it feels hot, the rear panel is separating, the frame is bent, you smell something unusual, you see smoke, or the damage followed liquid exposure.

Do not assume a lifted back proves the battery is swollen. Impact, frame distortion, adhesive failure, internal pressure, and earlier service can look similar from the outside. Treat any new gap as a stop-use sign and have the phone inspected.

A case may keep your fingers away from a crack, but it does not restore the enclosure or make continued use safe. Do not heat, pry, scrape, sand, glue, laser-separate, tape over for continued use, or remove the rear glass. Those are repair procedures, not owner checks.

Use a five-part rear-damage check

1. Glass and sharp-edge risk

Look without running your fingers across the damage. Note whether the crack is a fine line, a crushed corner, a missing chip, or a loose section. If small pieces can move or fall away, stop handling the phone more than necessary.

Take a clear photo with another device if you can do so safely. A photo helps show where the impact started and whether the crack reaches the frame, camera area, or charging region. It is more useful than repeatedly taking the phone in and out of a case.

2. Panel seam and any new lift

View the phone from the side on a flat surface. A consistent factory seam is different from a new wedge-shaped gap, a raised corner, or a back that rocks. Do not press on the glass to see whether it moves.

Record where the gap appears and whether it changed after a drop, heat event, charging session, or earlier repair. That timeline helps a technician separate rear-glass damage from a wider enclosure or internal-safety problem.

3. Frame and camera-area clues

Check the metal edge for a dent, twist, or corner that no longer sits flat. Then look at the camera lenses and surrounding rings. Stop if a lens cover is broken, a ring is loose, or the camera area has a deep impact.

If the phone remains safe to use, note whether the camera can focus and whether the flash works. Do not run a long test session. A successful photo does not prove that the camera mount, rear microphone, flash, frame, or sealing surfaces are sound.

4. Moisture and charging limits

Apple says splash, water, and dust resistance are not permanent and can decrease with wear. A cracked enclosure adds uncertainty. If the phone was exposed to liquid, disconnect cables and do not charge it until it is completely dry. Apple also says the phone should be dry before wireless charging.

5. What charging does—and does not—tell you

If the phone is cracked, lifted, hot, wet, or otherwise unsafe, skip the charging test. If it is cool, stable, dry, and safe to handle, a brief observation of normal wired or wireless charging can be useful information for service.

But charging success only tells you that charging happened during that test. It does not clear the charging coil, magnets, battery, camera area, frame, rear microphone, connectors, or liquid protection. Charging failure also does not prove that the back glass caused the problem. Cable, adapter, port, software, alignment, and power-source issues can overlap. Why the exact iPhone model matters

There is no single back-glass repair path for every iPhone. Apple’s current service flow asks for the exact model and damage category before showing an estimate, and Apple says the device must be inspected before the final service fee is known. Independent and authorized providers may also use different service methods and set their own fees.

Apple’s current Repair Assistant table lists back-glass support only for specified iPhone families. That is one more reason not to promise a universal part, calibration step, price, turnaround, or restored water resistance from a photo alone.

Find the model in Settings > General > About if the phone is safe to use. If it is not, check the original receipt, carrier account, box, or Apple Account device list instead. Bring the model information to the inspection rather than continuing to operate a damaged phone.

Prepare for service without exposing your accounts

  • Back up the phone only if it is cool, stable, and safe to use.
  • Let iCloud finish syncing when possible.
  • Write down the exact model, crack location, any panel gap, frame damage, camera symptoms, heat, moisture, charging behavior, and prior repairs.
  • Save photos of the damage and any repeatable camera or charging symptom.
  • Check Parts and Service History in Settings > General > About when available.
  • Confirm whether Find My must be turned off for the service path you choose.
  • Never give anyone your Apple Account password, device passcode, or account-security details.

If the iPhone is unresponsive or unsafe, complete only the steps that do not require charging, pressing the enclosure, or continued use.

What a useful inspection should answer

A good inspection should identify the exact model, document the enclosure and camera area, check for frame distortion and panel lift, review moisture and charging history, and explain the repair options that fit the phone in front of you.

It should also make the limits clear. A visual check may reveal obvious damage, but it cannot guarantee which internal part is healthy. The final quote, part path, calibration needs, warranty, and turnaround depend on the model, the full damage, parts availability, and the service method.
