Start here: look and listen before changing anything. No lights, fans, sounds, or response points to a no-power path. Lights, fans, beeps, blinking codes, a logo, or an error message prove that the computer is getting at least some power and belongs in a different branch.

Stop immediately for heat, odor, smoke, sparks, or liquid

If you notice smoke, sparking, a burning smell, unusual heat, liquid exposure, or visible cable damage, disconnect power only if you can do so safely. Do not keep pressing the power button. Do not open, probe, jumper, bypass, or try to repair a desktop power supply. It can retain dangerous energy after it is unplugged.

Keep the computer off after a surge, liquid spill, dropped metal object, or loud pop. These clues call for a physical inspection, not repeated power tests.

Choose the closest startup state

  • No power: no case light, fan movement, beep, drive sound, or keyboard response.
  • No POST: the desktop powers up but never completes its startup check. You may hear beeps, see a blinking light pattern, or stop at the maker’s logo.
  • No video: lights or fans suggest the computer is running, but the monitor stays blank or says there is no signal.
  • No boot: the computer reaches a logo or startup message, but Windows does not load.

This classification does not name a failed part. It tells you which evidence matters and prevents a monitor, Windows, or startup problem from being mistaken for a dead computer.

For true no power, check only the outside

  1. Check the outlet. Test it with a simple working device. If a power strip or surge protector is involved, confirm its switch and breaker state.
  2. Inspect the external cord. Look for cuts, crushed sections, loose plugs, heat damage, or bent contacts. Stop if the cord is damaged.
  3. Reseat the cord at both ends. With power disconnected, make sure the plug fits fully at the wall or strip and at the desktop.
  4. Disconnect nonessential peripherals. Remove USB drives, hubs, printers, external drives, and accessories. Leave the computer closed.
  5. Try one clean power test. Reconnect the known-good external power path and press the power button once. Record any light, fan twitch, click, beep, or blinking pattern.

If nothing changes, stop. Do not cycle the rear power switch repeatedly or copy an internal test from a different model. A silent desktop can involve the cord, switch, power supply, board, wiring, or another component, and the symptom alone does not prove which one.

If there are lights or fans, follow the evidence

For a blank display, confirm that the monitor has its own power light and that its input matches the connected cable. Check both ends of the display cable without forcing a connector. If the monitor works with another source, record that result. Do not move internal cards or cables as a generic first step.

For beeps or blinking lights, record the exact count, color, and repeating pattern. Look it up only in the support page or manual for the exact computer model. Codes are model-specific; a pattern from another brand or generation can point you in the wrong direction.

If you see a logo, recovery screen, “no boot device” message, or Windows error, take a photo. The computer is not in a true no-power state. Preserve the message before trying recovery steps.

Make a short evidence record

  • Computer make, full model, and serial or service tag.
  • Case lights, colors, blink pattern, fan movement, beeps, clicks, and monitor message.
  • What happened just before the failure: outage, surge, move, upgrade, spill, storm, update, or shutdown.
  • Which outlet, cord, display, and peripherals were tested.
  • Whether the symptom is consistent or changes between attempts.

A video of the first 20 seconds after one power-button press can be more useful than another round of guessing. It captures brief lights, sounds, and fan behavior that are easy to miss.

Know when to arrange a physical inspection

Get the desktop checked if the external power path is sound but it remains silent, if it powers on only intermittently, if a cord or port is loose or heat-damaged, or if you see a repeating diagnostic code you cannot resolve from the exact model guide. Also stop if the machine contains important data and repeated tests could make recovery harder.

A repair estimate should separate the observed startup state from the final diagnosis. Ask what was tested, what part failed under test, whether other components were affected, and whether the storage and data path remain accessible.
