Common problems with flat-screen TVs

Last updated September 27, 2026.

A blank screen, lines, missing sound, or a distorted picture does not identify the failed part by itself. Start with checks that do not require opening the television.

No picture or a no-signal message

Confirm that the TV and the connected device are on, then select the input that matches the connected cable. Reseat the cable at both ends and try a known-good cable or another input if one is available. If the TV menu appears normally, the source device, cable, service, or selected input is more likely than the display panel.

Lines, odd colors, or a distorted image

Open the TV menu or built-in picture test. A normal menu with a bad picture from one device points toward that device, its cable, or its input. Lines that remain on the TV menu or picture test may require service. Sony's screen troubleshooting guide uses the same source-versus-menu check.

Pixelation or buffering

Check another channel, app, or device. A problem limited to one streaming app may be a connection or service issue. A problem limited to antenna, cable, or satellite programming may need attention from that provider. Avoid changing several settings at once; one change at a time makes the result easier to interpret.

Picture with no sound

Check mute, volume, and the TV's audio-output setting. Disconnect headphones or Bluetooth audio that may be taking the sound. If an external speaker or soundbar is connected, test the TV's internal speakers and a second cable or input.

When to stop troubleshooting

Unplug the TV if you notice smoke, a burning smell, liquid inside the set, a damaged power cord, or unusual heat. Do not remove the rear cover. Internal parts can retain hazardous electrical energy after the TV is unplugged.

If the safe checks do not isolate the problem, note the model number and symptoms, then request a repair quote.
